3 Rules to Make Your Climbing Shoes Last Longer

Your climbing shoes are the most expensive thing you put on your body each session — and most climbers torch them way faster than they need to. Here are three rules that will save you rubber, save you money, and (rule #2) actually make you a better climber.

Climbing shoes aren't cheap.
So why do we treat them like garbage?
$150+ disappears the second the rubber blows out. And in my experience, most of that wear isn't from climbing hard, it's from a handful of small habits that quietly destroy shoes between sessions. The good news: three rules. That's it.
Rule #1: Keep them out of the sun.
UV breaks down rubber. Period. If you toss your shoes on the dashboard after a session at the crag, or leave them sitting in a sunny spot in your gear room, you're basically slow-cooking the stickiest part of your shoe.
🔷 Don't leave them in the car
Especially in summer. The dashboard is the worst offender — UV plus heat is a one-two punch that hardens rubber and kills friction.
🔷 Pack them in a bag, not a side pocket
Stuffed in the outside mesh of a backpack? Direct sunlight, the whole walk in. A dedicated shoe compartment shields them every time.
Rule #2: Stop toe-tapping.
(This one will make you a better climber.)
Hot take: it's actually awesome to climb in shoes that are almost at their end. Your big toe feels super supple — like you just stepped in melted ice cream — and it sticks to everything. (Tip 2B: no actual ice cream on your shoes.)
But that moment passes fast. Your shoes blow out, and poof — $150 gone.
Here's the thing though: the reason that sticky-toe feeling is so good is because you put your foot somewhere and you commit. And in my experience, it's toe-tapping — the little re-adjustments, the tentative placements — that wears out shoes the fastest.
🔷 Spot your foot ahead of time
Look at the hold. Decide where the foot is going. Then go.
🔷 Place it with conviction
One placement, no readjusting. You save rubber, save energy, and your climbing actually gets better. It's a rare twofer.
🔷 Trust the placement
Half of toe-tapping is anxiety. The other half is laziness. Both are fixable, and both are eating your rubber.
Rule #3: Let them dry and breathe.
Damp shoes = funky shoes = rubber that breaks down faster and a bag that smells like a crime scene. Airing them out is the easiest, cheapest thing you can do, and almost nobody does it.
🔷 Take them off between burns
Your feet need a break, and so does the inside of your shoe. Five minutes of airflow between attempts goes a long way.
🔷 Hang them up after sessions
Don't leave them balled up in the bottom of your bag overnight. Pull them out, hang them up, let them actually dry.
🔷 Use boot bananas (or a vented bag)
Boot bananas are great. A bag with proper ventilation and a smell-resistant liner is even better — it dries them passively while you go about your day.
The Megabeta Sling Bag
Designed by a climber, for climbers. A dedicated, ventilated shoe compartment that keeps your rubber out of the sun and lets your shoes actually breathe between sessions.
✅ Ventilated, smell-proof shoe compartment
✅ UV-shielded storage
Shoes stay tucked inside the bag, not exposed in a side pocket frying in the sun on your walk to the crag.
✅ Smart Gear Organization
✅ Gym to Crag to Everyday
Compact enough to fit under airplane seats, versatile enough for the crag, the gym, or just running errands.

Treat your shoes well.
They'll send you further.
Three rules. Out of the sun, off the toe-taps, into the air. Do those things and a $150 pair of shoes lasts a lot longer — and a bag that's actually built around them makes all three way easier.
